It keeps the best one and removes the rest. Copies are ranked by resolution first, then file size, then duration, then capture date — so a 4K original always outranks a compressed copy that came back through a messaging app. Favourited items are never proposed for deletion.
Open Photos → Albums → Recently Deleted. Anything Duplicate Cleaner removed stays there for 30 days and can be recovered in full quality.
It is the total size on disk of the redundant copies — what you would actually get back. Each item is counted once, so nothing is double-counted, and the keeper in every group is excluded.
Very large libraries are scanned up to a cap so the scan finishes quickly. Run it again after cleaning and it will pick up the next set. Favourites and hidden items are skipped by design.
To measure file sizes and compare image content, it has to read the library; to remove copies, it needs write access. Nothing is uploaded, and nothing is deleted without the system prompt.
The scan is free. The subscription unlocks the cleanup action. To view, change or cancel it, open the Settings app → tap your name → Subscriptions, or use the Manage Subscription link inside the app. Cancel at least 24 hours before a free trial ends to avoid being charged.
Tap Restore at the top of the paywall. Purchases are tied to your Apple Account and restore on any device signed into it.
